Dry Needling

Thin monofilament needles are placed into painful muscles and tendons or near irritable nerves to calm inflammation and painful nervous system signals. The treatment may last anywhere from 5-20 minutes depending on your tolerance and preference.

E-Stim

Or "electrical stimulation" can be added to the needles to enhance effects such as increased blood flow, activation of pain-blocking pathways in the nervous system, and muscle tissue relaxation.

Dry Needling FAQs

Why is it called "dry needling"?

Dry needling is similar to acupuncture in that no medication is injected. The whole process simply involves cleaning the skin with a safe disinfectant wipe, inserting the needles into the involved tissue, and then potentially adding electrical stimulation if desired.

Does dry needling hurt?

Typically, dry needling is actually not painful at all! Your therapist will do everything possible to minimize the feeling of the needle being inserted so that all you feel is the therapeutic and relaxing effects. Of course, every individual is different and we cannot guarantee you will not experience pain to some extent, but the process is not intended to be painful and should actually feel relaxing.

What can dry needling help with?

Dry needling creates a non-specific effect on the muscles and nervous system, meaning it can help with a wide variety of pain and injuries! Some examples include:

1) Headaches and migraines

2) Neck pain

3) Low back pain

4) Arm and leg joint pain

5) Sciatica

6) Plantar fasciitis

...and so much more!

Does insurance cover dry needling?

No, most insurance plans do not cover dry needling.

How much does dry needling cost?

Dry needling is offered through our Pain Management sessions and, for an individual session, is $100 for a 30-minute session. However, package options are available that reduce the cost by over 30% per session!

When is dry needling NOT appropriate?

Dry needling is not appropriate for situations involving the following:

1) Complete loss of sensation in the involved area

2) Significant cognitive deficits of the client

3) Areas with open wounds

4) Areas with significant lymphedema

5) Areas with signs of infection

6) Clients with allergies to metal

...and others. Your therapist will provide a thorough screen and documentation to ensure dry needling would be appropriate in your case.
